The Marley Board

The Marley board was a fun surprise. For a while, Panama had been calling me. So, I did a search for the best surf spots in Panama and found a Caribbean archipelago called Bocas del Toro.

I took a flight and when I landed on my very first day, I found this great group of friends from England who had met up with two guys from Venezuela. We had a blast exploring the various local spots and enjoying the island life.

There was a surfer named Marley and we had a day where we walked across the island through the jungle to a great surf spot and had a really fun experience riding the waves and grilling on the beach. When he left, he said he wanted to sell his board so he didn’t have to travel with it…and I happily offered to take it off his hands.

He told me there was a design underneath but he painted over it because there was a gash that had been repaired and he didn’t like how it looked. So, I took the layer of paint off and underneath I found a pretty cool design.

I could instantly see that the horizontal lines killed the flow of the board, and the gash toward the nose needed to addressed. So, I designed a way to paint the board with black lines to give it more of a flow that worked with the form of the board and painted two sets of lines to obscure the gash. I redid the logo and the board was really starting to come together.
I just needed to put a coat of epoxy over it, give it a new deck and new fins and it would be done. But I had to leave Bocas del Toro and left the board with a friend so I could come back and finish it later. Sadly, the board disappeared and I never had the chance to complete it. But you can see what it would have looked like with a new deck and a Bob Marley sticker to honor its original owner. Now the Marley Board exists only as a memory…
